Expertly Developed Bird Food
At CJ Wildlife we have been developing wild bird food for over 35 years. Our blends are created by in-house experts, tested by ornithologists, and trusted by wildlife charities across the UK. Every seed mix, fat ball, suet block, peanut cake and straight seed is carefully designed to meet the nutritional needs of garden birds. More than 80 species have been recorded on our foods, so you can feed with confidence and attract a wonderful variety to your garden.
Choosing the Right Bird Food Through the Seasons
Spring and Summer
During breeding season, protein-rich foods are essential. Mealworms, insect-rich suet and sunflower hearts help adult birds feed hungry chicks and recover after nesting. Offering food little and often is especially valuable, and rehydrating dried mealworms makes them even easier for young birds to digest.
Autumn
As birds moult and prepare for winter or migration, they need to build up reserves. High-energy seed mixes, peanuts and suet-based foods provide vital calories. Species such as goldfinches, tits and starlings will make good use of these energy-rich foods at this time of year.
Winter
Cold weather brings natural food shortages. Fat balls, sunflower seeds, suet blocks and peanut cakes offer concentrated calories that help birds survive frosty nights. Even species that don’t usually visit feeders, like blackbirds and robins, will come closer in search of food.
Our Bird Food Ranges
- Seed Mixes: Our premium bird seed mixes are developed specifically for UK gardens. Options include no-mess mixes that leave feeding areas clean, and no-grow blends to stop unwanted seedlings in lawns and borders. Carefully balanced with cereals, oils and proteins, our mixes attract everything from sparrows and finches to robins and dunnocks.
- Sunflower Hearts & Straight Seeds: Sunflower hearts are husk-free and oil-rich, providing a mess-free, high-energy food loved by finches, tits and robins. We also offer black sunflower seeds and striped sunflower varieties. CJ Wildlife was the first to bring Black Sunflower Seeds to the UK wild bird market, and we continue to source mainly from Europe, with some UK-grown seed when available.
- Fat Balls, Suet Blocks & Peanut Cakes: Our fat balls for birds are the UK’s most popular wild bird food. They’re packed with high-quality fats and oils, with added seeds, fruit or insects for extra nutrition. Suet blocks and peanut cakes are excellent for woodpeckers, starlings, tits and nuthatches. Though often used in winter, suet products also support birds during breeding, moulting and migration when energy needs are high.
- Peanuts: Rich in natural fats and oils, our bird peanuts are available whole or kibbled for smaller species and fledglings. In 1990 CJ Wildlife became the first UK company to offer peanuts with nil-detectable aflatoxin levels, protecting birds from harmful moulds. We’ve maintained this strict standard ever since, ensuring every bag is safe and nutritious.
- Mealworms & Insects: Dried mealworms and live mealworms are invaluable for insect-loving birds like robins, blackbirds and wrens. They provide protein when natural insect supplies are low. Tip: soak dried mealworms in water to make them softer and easier to digest, particularly for chicks in spring.
- Peanut Butter for Birds: Our salt-free peanut butter for birds is a safe, calorie-rich food that’s irresistible to garden visitors. Spread into a special feeder, it’s a high-energy snack that robins, tits and even woodpeckers will quickly discover.
Quality & Responsible Sourcing
Most of our bird food is blended at our own farm using natural, non-GM ingredients. We prioritise UK and European suppliers to keep food miles low, but some ingredients, such as peanuts, require warmer climates and are sourced responsibly from South America and the USA. Every batch is independently tested for nutritional value and safety, so you can be confident your garden birds are receiving food of the highest quality.
Testing, Transparency & Innovation
We work closely with ornithologists and wildlife charities, pioneering many of the bird foods now standard in the UK. New recipes are tested both in our trial gardens and by CJ Wildlife staff in their own gardens. Feedback ensures our foods are well accepted by birds in real-life conditions. We also provide transparent nutritional information, including calorie content, so you always know exactly what you are feeding your garden birds. Curious to see our food in action?
